MLG, Florida Law Firm, Inspires Students and Diversity in the Legal Profession

One of the best ways for young people to prepare for a career in law is to hear from respected practitioners in the field. Starlett Massey, founding shareholder of Massey Law Group, was honored to be invited to be a panelist at the Law Day event hosted by Seminole State College.

On Friday, April 12, 2019, the college’s Career Development Center held a diversity pipeline event directed at students who are interested in becoming attorneys and paralegals. Students had the opportunity to gain valuable information and ask questions of panelists. In total, approximately 120 students from Seminole State College and Lake Mary High School and members of the Young Men and Women of Excellence were in attendance.

“Several young female students came up to me after the event. They expressed that they had not been sure there was a place for them in the legal community until attending the event and hearing me speak,” said Starlett. “Now, they are more committed to pursuing their dreams.”

Seminole State College hosts similar events year-round to help inform and inspire students and alumni interested in various studies and fields. The programming provides career and professional development activities to explore majors and career paths, gain experience, and plan their education. Large recruiting events are also held by the Career Development Center so that students and alumni may meet industry representatives seeking interns and employees.

Experiential learning at colleges and universities comes in many forms — from community engagement to service learning and educational events. Law Day at Seminole State College offered students a hands-on opportunity to engage, interact, and reflect on how they see themselves in a future career in law.

The American Bar Association has reported that overall law school enrollment is up (based on enrollment data for Fall 2018). More students are interested in legal careers — an indicator that more students want to make a positive change in their lives and in our world.
